Children's Reading Kits, or "CRiKits"

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

CRiKit bags are circulating themed Children’s Reading Kits which aid parents in choosing appropriate books for children and begining to use the dialogic reading technique to develop critical early literacy skills that will support school readiness and success in school. These Kits include a varied selection of quality books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and puppets, puzzles or other props. Each Kit is different and includes a different combination of materials.

Each CRiKit bag includes information on the benefits of Dialogic Reading, how to read using that approach, and several books have attached questions to spark discussion of books and their illustrations. Extension activities, to expand the potential uses of the pack, are also included.

The program has many important benefits:

Family Literacy:  Creates awareness of the long-lasting value of learning and literacy when parents and childcare providers read to young children from infancy. Encourages a fun, daily ritual of parents reading to their children and a tradition that can be passed on to future generations.

School Readiness:  Provides resources for parents to develop their children’s pre-literacy skills, which will impact future performance in school.
